Manchester City did not rival Liverpool for the signature of Virgil van Dijk.
Citizens didn’t believe the then-Southampton defender warranted his price tag.
According to the Manchester Evening News, City were keen to add a new central defender during the January transfer window.
City chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak is seen baulking at the transfer fee being touted for the Dutchman.
"Come on, you cannot be serious," Al-Mubarak said.
He then adds: "Ultimately, if it makes sense for us we will do it. If it doesn't make sense, we are perfectly comfortable in walking away.
"To do that, there's only a few clubs in the world that can do that."
