We already have the first big surprise in new Champions league campaign. Russian vice-champions FC Rostov unexpectedly reached the group stage, despite the harsh draw, which forced them to play two UCL permanent residents of last years. First, they have eliminated Anderlecht in a convincing manner (1-1 at home and a 0-2 away win).
However, after being drawn to Ajax, the Russian team’s chances to succeed were little. Ajax are one of those teams that have always added colors to the most important European competition. The 4-times UCL winners, howbeit, didn’t meet the expectations. After playing 1-1 in Amsterdam, Peter Bosz’s team traveled to Rostov-on-Don in hope of breaking the Russian side’s strong defense.
Nevertheless, the Dutch side couldn’t imagine even in their worst dreams what would happen there. Dmitri Kirichenko’s men have literally beaten their famous rivals, sending 4 goals into Jasper Cillessen’s net. Only after that the Lancers could score one goal. The “Lucky Ajax”, as fans often call their team, didn’t show any sign of being a top European club.
Rostov managed to overcome two strong opponents in a short period of time and made their fans’ dream come true. They will play their first ever Champions league campaign in club’s 86-year history.
