Romelu Lukaku, Mata and Mourinho set for UEFA Super Cup flashback

Romelu Lukaku joined Manchester United and that means the Belgian will most likely play in the UEFA Super Cup against European champions Real Madrid

The last time these came together in the UEFA Super Cup was back in 2013 when Europa League winners Chelsea faced off with Bayern Munich who beat Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final. Obviously, that was not the best night for the Blues to remember.

The Special One returned to Chelsea for a second spell and victory in the UEFA Super Cup could have been a big boost for the Blues in the upcoming campaign. The normal time ended in a 1-1 draw, with both sides adding 1 goal each in extra time to form the final score of 2-2.  The Blues eventually lost the game on penalties. Young Romelu Lukaku’s poor effort sealed the victory for Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich.

Now Lukaku is a Red Devil alongside Juan Mata, and under the wing of Jose Mourinho Manchester United will try to defeat the indestructible Real Madrid side.

The favourites in this clash are Real Madrid. Zinedine Zidane has constructed a lethal force, a squad with great depth and, undoubtedly, Los Blancos will be keen to secure their second UEFA Super Cup in a row. Real Madrid beat Sevilla in last year’s competition by 3 goals to 2.

But if you take a look from another perspective The Special One has the name for a reason. Jose Mourinho is a mastermind when it comes to decisive games. The Portuguese has won 12 of his 14 finals. Even with the current squad, The Red Devils have good chances against the European champions. Juan Mata who was an unused substitute at Eden Arena In 2013 now could have a chance to prove himself and get a starting line-up spot for the upcoming campaign. That might help the Spaniard as the competition among midfielders is great. The likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan Jesse Lingard, Antoni Martial, Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera and others will be competing for the place in Mourinho’s XI.

Manchester United are on their pre-season tour and Romelu Lukaku is already showing glimpses of what he can be.

The Belgium International scored his first goal for United in a friendly match against Real Salt Lake.

The UEFA Super Cup is less than a month away and the clash of Manchester United with Real Madrid is set to gather a lot of attention as Europe’s best face off.
