Real Madrid complete worst LaLiga season

As Real Madrid drew against Villarreal on Saturday evening, they reached their worst points total in 11 years. They ended a season with 76 points and 94 goals scored. That point total matches the 2006/07 season by Fabio Capello although they nonetheless won the division that year, having finished second on 70 points in 2005/06. The Italian's squad also scored 94 goals that year in a league where the gap between the top and bottom sides was less evident that it is now, with 2008/09 the most recent time a Madrid team scored fewer than the current. That season was also the last one in which Los Blancos conceded more goals than 2017/18, letting in 52 compared to Zidane's 44. The positive news for Real is that, despite finishing third and 17 points off Barcelona should the Catalans win on Sunday, much of that will be forgotten if they triumph in Kiev and lift the Champions League for a third consecutive year.

Zidane: “Nothing has changed with Bale, only now he is scoring.”
