A chartered plane has suffered a crash on its way to Colombia’s Medellin international airport. There were 72 people on board, including Brazilian football team Chapecoense.
The team was flying to Colombia to face Atletico Nacional in the first of a two-game Copa Sudamericana final. The team which represents the small city of Chapeco, has qualified for Brazil’s Serie A in 2014 for the first time since the 1970s. In two years the club managed to reach the Copa Sudamericana finals, after defeating Argentina’s legendary San Lorenzo.
Medellin’s Mayor Federico Gutierrez shared his hope that there are survivors after this tragedy. “It’s a tragedy of huge proportions, but it’s still possible there are survivors,” Gutierrez told Blu Radio.
