Manchester United's eight-man defender shortlist revealed

Manchester United have reportedly drawn up a shortlist of eight defenders as Jose Mourinho looks to boost his backline this summer, according to Mirror Football. While Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld remains an option, the 29-year-old is not thought to be a preferred name on the shortlist. Mourinho is considering alternatives to the Belgian as he looks to sign a new defender for the third summer in a row, reports the Manchester Evening News. It is understood that scouts have expressed concerns about Alderwireld’s profile and he is not a 100% target this summer. United are interested looking further afield to the Bundesliga, La Liga and Serie A for a potential starting centre-back, which has now become the priority following the signings of Fred an Diogo Dalot. A number of defenders are understood to be on United's radar, including Raphael Varane, Jerome Boateng, Kalidou Koulibaly, Milan Skriniar, Alessio Romagnoli, Jose Gimenez and Caglar Soyuncu, but any prospective deal is expected to be the club's most complicated transfer this summer.
