EXCLUSIVE: Thomas Vermaelen: It’s difficult to step on to the pitch and try to lose

Belgium star Thomas Vermaelen had his first appearance in World Cup 2018 against England national team. Barcelona star has spoken about his eye injury that he got during the match. “I’m not injured, I feel good, I can play, I could have played 90 minutes, but coach told me to play 60-70 minutes to give Viny (Company) some minutes, that’s important.” Vermaelen told VivaroNews Sport. Former Arsenal captain, who moved to Barcelona in 2014, was also asked about the playoff opponents and the final places in the group. Belgium national team will face Japan in ⅛ finals and in case of victory, their next possible opponents will become Brazil, while England are in better conditions. Gareth Southgate’s team will face Colombia and if they win, their opponent in ¼ finals will become either Switzerland, or Sweden. “I know about the talks on the places. But it’s difficult to step on to the pitch and try to lose. We tried to do our best, because the players on the pitch haven’t played a lot, so for us it was important to play and to win” he added.
