Germany v Italy encounter is the classical European giant clash. This is the final many dreamt of, but we will witness this match only in the quarterfinals. Italian tactics vs German discipline. Which side will turn out to be the strongest?
Both Germany and Italy managed to head their groups due to additional measures. However, this does not mean they got lucky. Both of the clubs showed constructive, measured and sometimes beautiful football in the group stage. Italy’s win against Belgium, for example, can be fairly announced the game of right tactical decisions by Italy manager Antonio Konte.
Germany, in turn, did not show the whole reserve of the team’s abilities and disappointed some of the fans during the group stage. Things changed in the round of 16, where Germany occupied all the zones on the pitch, giving no chance to Slovakia (3-0).
In the same round the Italians won against the title holders Spain (2-0), taking the revenge of Euro-2012 final.
Italy, probably, have the best H2H statistics against Germany. Throughout the whole history of these national teams Germany won only 5 games while facing Italy, having lost 11 and drawn 4. The most recent competitive loss was in Euro-2012 semi-finals (2-1). In general, Germany have never beaten Italy at a major tournament.
Gianluigi Buffon v Manuel Neuer
This is the most obvious, still the most interesting and intriguing battle in the field. This is the battle of dominating the penalty area, or maybe the battle of proving to be the best goalkeeper in the world at the moment. Although Buffon himself admitted that Neuer is not simply better than him the world football still doubts that! This is the battle where the quickest, tallest goalkeeper with phenomenal reaction will face the experienced, smart keeper with amazing intuition on the pitch. What a clash!!!
Germany → none
