Barcelona’s vice-president Jordi Cardoner backed Pique over his words regarding Real Madrid and their “values”.
Cardoner, 54, spoke about Lionel Messi’s suspension after directing “insulting words” at an assistant referee during the match against Chile.
Pique has expressed an opinion freely,” said Cardoner. “He said it very clearly, and sometimes clarity can offend.
“Pique has not told a lie; Barcelona is always in favour of the truth.”
“FIFA acts on its own initiative and that is a surprise because it has never done so before,” he continued.
“The sanction [for Messi] is exaggerated.”
Lionel Messi has been handed a four-game ban.
